Balcony Garden: Harvest Monday #10

It's getting down to the business end of things on the balcony with mostly just herbs left for the picking.  I have attempted to grow tomatoes on my balcony this summer but so far, no good. They've been infested with budworms and blossom end rot - a very sad ending indeed.

Tomatoes aside, I usually have some coriander growing out on the balcony, but there never seems be enough to use for anything more than a garnish.  Any recipe calling for a "whole bunch of coriander" would basically wipe out the one little tub I have on the go...and of course I then use the coriander so sparingly the whole thing bolts and becomes unusable anyway. There's no saving herbs + veggies for another day that's for sure.

One of the dishes I love to cook is this super simple Singapore Chili Prawn recipe from Iron Chef Shellie's blog.

When I say I like "simple" this recipe is the epitome of everything I hold dear in cooking...quick, easy and hardly any ingredients. It's perfect to whip up on a weeknight after work.  It's on the table in about 15 minutes! And best of all, it tastes delicious, especially with a scattering of homegrown coriander.

  1. Sorry to hear that your tomatoes didn't do well, but they are extra challenging to grow in pots and bud worms, ack, once those critters settle in it seems impossible to evict them.

The coriander looks great and the shrimp recipe looks like a winner. I love those simple but delicious recipes.

    1. I hacked back the tomatoes until the point of nakedness and believe or not they have sprung back! Total fluke.

  2. Nice one, Mel. I'm not having luck with tomatoes either this year, but wondering if it's due to lack of bee activity.

    1. I "think" tomatoes are insect pollinated...don't need bees...but I could very well (most likely) be wrong on that score.

  3. My tomatoes have survived but been quite dry :-(
I also have similar problems with coriander ... i reckon it's one of the hardest seedlings to grow. I gave up on it long ago.
I love the look of the Singapore chilli prawns and have printed off the recipe to put to after work use, one night soon.
    Thanks for sharing.

  4. Love this recipe, I should totally make it again soon!

I have the worst trouble growing coriander, but yes, there is never enough for a recipe, only a garnish... wish sucks cos I freakin love the stuff!

  5. I have to say that while your balcony garden trials and tribulations have provided hours of amusement I'm very impressed at your efforts! The balconies on our building are known to be cursed for plants due to direction so I can't grow a thing!
