Essen Restaurant & Beer Café, Broadway

Miss Piggy + The BFF dined as guests of Essen at the invitation of Wasamedia.

Now that the weather is (finally) cooling down it's the perfect time to enjoy some hearty winter fare....the type of food that Essen's serves up in spades (or on plates actually but that's not how the saying goes).

You can find Essen's at the bottom of a little collection of restaurants on busy Broadway.  It's a big, cheerfully busy, wood paneled restaurant where students and office-workers all gather for schnitzel, beer and some good old Eastern European fare. Much of this food is what I grew up eating and I'm thrilled to be revisiting some of my culinary childhood.

On my way back from visiting the ‘facilities’ I spied a jar of something pretty and very pink on a neighbouring table.  It looked really good with its side of thick malt bread…so I ordered it immediately! I am so over having food envy! The Matjes Herring ($14.00) – a dish added to the menu by Essen’s Dutch chef - was subtly salty and came served with with finely chopped beetroot, gherkin, apple and a splosh of vodka and sour cream. All the elements mixed so well together to make a sweet, sour and slightly salty dip that I was intent on devouring every last morsel of! It reminded me a bit of a subtle horseradish.

Their Lamb Goulash with Sauerkraut ($26.00) is normally served with a side of Munich malt bread however we asked for a side of their spelt spaetzle ($5.50) as I was desperate to try the spaetzle but knew I’d never be able to fit it in as a (third) main course.  The spaetzle was deliciously savoury and chewy with some great crunch to the outer shell. It was almost meaty in texture – a bit like tender chicken in texture rather than a noodle.  It may look plain but it was so flavoursome that we polished off half the bowl sans goulash.

I’ve eaten a lot of Goulash in my time, being the daughter of a Hungarian mother – but I’ve never had it with tender, fall-part chunks of lamb and I have to say that it works really well. Lamb is so prevalent in Australia that it's great to see a traditional dish taking a local twist. I also liked that the goulash itself was less “soupy” than traditional Hungarian goulash as all the elements in the dish stood well on their own and the goulash didn't render the spaetzle soggy.  Our plate of goulash was topped with a HUGE mound of sauerkraut – a sight that would’ve had me gagging at the dinner table as a child, but I’ve finally made my piece with sauerkraut and we are friends....not best friends, but we're on speaking terms these days.

I cannot go to Essen’s (or Una’s for that matter) without ordering the Veal Jaeger Schnitzel ($22.50). I’ve been ordering this schnitzel for YEARS and it never disappoints.  The tender thin pieces of veal are crumbed, fried and then topped with the most delectable creamy mushroom sauce.  What makes this dish even better is the mound of creamy potato roesti that is fried until the outside is crispy perfection. I am also quite partial to the cabbage salad that comes dusted with paprika.

I think The BFF was scared by the thought of all the meat we’d ordered so we added a nice little green salad to the mix to help offset any meat-sweats that might occur during the meal.

Although we're quite full by this time our waitress convinced us that Essen’s strudels are worth activating our dessert stomachs for. We don't take much convincing and put in an order for chocolate and hazelnut strudel that is served with vanilla sauce ice cream. The strudel is served warm and layers + layers of flaky pastry are wrapped around a gooey mix of melted chocolate and chopped hazelnuts. Every mouthful is perfect with a spoon of the ice-cream added to the mix.

Essen's can be found at 133-135 Broadway, Ultimo. Phone them on 9211 3805.

Bavarian Bier Cafe, Parramatta

Bavarian Bier Cafe in Parramatta has been on The Boy's wish list ever since we moved here back in 2010.  My thoughts on this ranged from "meh" to..."meh" as I just wasn't convinced it would be anywhere near as delicious as the Schnitzel mecca Una's in Darlinghurst. I'm pleased to say I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Bavarian Beir Cafe is located in the old St Andrews Church building in Parramatta - a very impressive and beautiful setting indeed.  The main dining room is enormous and retains just enough of a touch of its former church-i-ness that it doesn't feel too sacrilegious downing the great vats of beer/bier on offer.

The "small" 350ml Bier glasses here hold about 10 times what I would normally drink...but when in a faux German Bier Hall I like to go with the flow. The Boy choose a Stiegl Goldbräu ($11 for 500ml) and I went for the Franziskaner Lemon Weissbier ($7.50 for 350ml), a type of wheat beer with a splash of Limonata. YUM, German shandy!

Because I was still getting over the epic degustation from Restaurant Arras the previous night I convinced The Boy to share the Münchner Brauhaus Platter ($37.70) with me - though there has got to be no way one person could eat all of this meat...or is there?

The platter contains generous serves of Crackling Roast Pork Belly (best crackling - so salty and crunchy), Char-Grilled Kassler (aka Ham Steak), Sausages, Chicken Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage and Sebago Mash. Up until this point I have despised Sauerkraut and Red Cabbage Sauerkraut beyond all reason - but I have to say these guys have changed my mind. YUM!

For the price I think this is an excellent option when sharing with someone else.  And good news is that most of the meat here is Organic and Free Range which I think is impressive for chain of restaurants used to churning out big numbers of meals.

I order a token Side Salad ($6.00) just so my arteries know I care about them...sort of.

After our meal we waddled down to Prince Alfred Park to catch a show in the fabulous Spiegletent that is was visiting Parramatta as part of Sydney Festival.  I really hope that Parramatta has such a great line of events at next years' festival as it's been wonderful to have so many events right on our doorstep.

And our show - we saw the fabulous Ed Kuepper, an oldie but a goodie who I haven't seen in concert for about 15 years (yes I'm THAT old)!

Bavarian Bier Cafe is at 2-8 Phillip Street, Parramatta. Phone them on 8836 1400.

Una's, Darlinghurst

The Boy and I end up in Darlinghurst on Sunday for a birthday lunch for my my big brother "just call me Bob". We were initially trying for the Malaya at Darling Harbour but surprisingly they're not open on Sundays.

The Boy and I have a bit a chuckle at how often we end up back on Victoria Street in Darlinghurst. It's the street where we met, where we had our first date and where we got married.  We've had a few dinners at Una's so are quite chuffed to inadvertently be back here again.

Una's is pretty legendary for the size of the main meals, so I'm surprised when everyone orders entrees.  The Boy and I agree to share an entree of Crumbed Mushrooms ($9.40).  The mushrooms are juicy and flavoursome, and I love the creamy dill dipping sauce.

For main I cannot go past my all time favourite, Veal Jager Schnitzel ($19.90).  The schnitzels at Una's are always massive, and come with a hearty side of potato rosti that has a delicious crispy outer shell. The jager sauce is a creamy mushroom sauce that smothers the schnitzel.  In a word, delicious. In a few more words...too much food for even the most die hard schnitzel fan to finish!

The majority of the mains at Una's also come with a refreshing cabbage salad, sprinkled with sweet paprika.  I didn't eat too much of the salad...I was saving some stomach room for a trip across the road to Gelato Messina to try their new Pavlova Gelato (it's amazing).

Una's is at 338/340 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. Make sure you come here with an empty stomach.
