Golden Fang, Broadway

You'd be forgiven for thinking the only thing Miss Chicken and I do when we get together is eat...because it pretty much is. Although we also talk...about eating. And walk...to where we are eating. And think...about where we are going to eat next!

Today we meet up at Golden Fang for a quick lunch time feast.  Golden Fang is a cheap and cheerful Chinese Malaysian restaurant that serves up huge meals for very little coin.  It's situated on an uber-busy, noisy and grimy stretch of City Road and if you didn't know what joy lies within you'd probably pass right by on your way to Broadway Shopping Center.  And that would be a mistake.

I'm hell bent on finally getting my fill of Minced Pork with Green Beans ($12.00) after so many near misses in recent weeks.  Green Beans with Pork Mince seem to be hard to find and I'm always stumbling the version that comes with Kidney Beans, which are lovely, but not what I've been craving for over the last few months.

This meal is HUGE and goes a good way to satisfying my cravings. The plate is peppered with bits of pork mince and the beans have a slight charred flavour and glisten with oil. Lovely. But you know what?  I think I actually prefer my green beans with kidney beans and not pork mince. Hard to please, I know.

Miss Chicken orders Shredded Duck with Pickled Vegetables Fried Noodles ($10.50).  This huge plate of noodles is delicious. The duck is tasty and succulent and the pickled vegetables help cut through the fattiness of the duck. The pickled vegetables remind me a little of seaweed dishes you'd find in Japanese restaurants, slightly sour, but lovely.

This monstrous plate of fried noodles makes us regret also ordering dumplings.  Our eyes are definitely bigger than our stomachs on this lunchtime adventure, but when I see dumplings on a menu I just can't pass them by.

A plate of fourteen Steamed Pork Dumplings will only set you back $8.00.  If I'm eating alone at Golden Fang for lunch this is often what I order for myself.  The dumplings are plump with pork filing, and the skin is not too thick...and not too thin.  Miss Chicken and I polish these off and head off back to work with doggy bags of our other lunchtime leftovers.

Our meal finishes with a complimentary plate of orange slices - thanks Golden Fang!  A nice, fresh way to finish up our lunch that leaves a sweet taste in our mouth.

Malacca Straits, Broadway

The first time I visited Malacca Straits was with Mr Shawn and Miss Chicken on one of their many blogging adventures.

It was the first time I'd been out with someone on a blog trip and I was so excited...irrationally so now that I think about.  For me it was so much fun watching Mr Shawn take his snaps of the food and discussing the meal and what we thought of it (in a non-pretentious and non-wanky way of course).  Most of all I couldn't wait to read the blog post the following day.

Needless to say I have fond memories of Malacca Straits, not only for their tasty and affordable food but as it was my first foray into eating with people that love dining out as much as I do.

So when Miss Chicken suggested lunch at Malacca Straights a few weeks ago I didn't hesitate in saying yes.  I've actually been here about five times since my first visit, but never with my (dodgy) camera, and not since I've been writing my blog.

Malacca Straights is a true gem hidden in the courtyard of the Quadrant Building on Broadway. In fact, it is not really that hidden anymore as each time I've been for lunch there has been a crowd.

Being totally addicted to Roti Bread I don't even have to think twice about what I'm having for lunch - Roti Canai ($10.00) please!

I order my Roti Canai with Beef Rendang as I LOVE Beef Rendang and have it at every opportunity I get.  I also order a side of rice as I've found in the past that a bit of rice goes well with the curry dip and sambal sauce - once I've run out of buttery Roti to mop everything up with that is!

The Beef Rendang at Malacca Straits is lovely with tender, melt in the mouth beef.  The rendang sauce is plentiful with just the right amount of spiciness.

The only thing that would make the Roti Canai better for is if it came with three...or four...pieces of Roti. But I'm just being a piggy really.

Malacca Straits Broadway can be found at Unit 5/66 Mountain Street, Ultimo.

Maki Maki, Ultimo

I'm very excited when I receive an email from Miss Chicken asking me for a lunch date today.  She's just gotten back from an all-you-can-eat holiday to Japan with Mr Shawn so I'm keen to catch up on their adventures.

I'm a little surprised when Miss Chicken suggests Maki Maki on Broadway. I thought she'd be all Japanese fooded out after her eight day trip.  The japanese lunch is an attempt to abate the pain at being back at work and relive the holiday glory - I know how that feels.

Maki Maki

The last time we ate at Maki Maki I had the most amazing Soft Shell Crab Udon Noodle Soup and was all set to go for this again today.

Miss Chicken alerts me to the new lunch time special where we can order a rice (or noodle) bowl AND a sushi roll for $10!  Seems too good to be true.

Lunchtime dreams can come true
I go for the Chicken Teriyaki Rice Bowl with a Dragon Roll on the side. Miss Chicken chooses the Spicy Pork Rice Bowl as she is chilli fiend and an Alaska Roll.

The sushi arrives almost seconds after we order it.  We both whip out our cameras and I try to make my photos look as good as I know Miss Chickens will.

The sushi is freshly made, tasty and is just the right amount. My Dragon Roll comes topped with eel and an avacado and shredded crab filling (or seafood extender - who can really tell).  I've only ever had Dragon Roll with cream cheese in the middle so this is an interesting change.

Dragon Roll
The Alaska Roll also comes with an avacado and shredded crab/seafood extender filling and is topped with a mixture of salmon and avocado.

Alaska Roll
Whilst we're still snapping away at our sushi the rice bowls arrive. OMG - there is so much food on our table and the rice bowls are ENORMOUS!  I don't know how I'm going to fit everything into my stomach.

The Chicken Teriyaki has a lovely crisp skin surrounding a succulent chicken breast and comes with cabbage, something red that I cannot identify and rice.  There is also some bright red pickled lotus root which I'm fascinated with as it's so pretty.  I can't get the camera thing happening well enough to take a picture of it which makes me sad.

Chicken Teriyaki
I try Miss Chicken's spicy pork which is...spicy, so lives up to its name.

Spicy, but not too spicy, pork
The food is as good as I remember from last time, however the service has changed a bit.

We have to order and pay for our meal at the cash register - which is no big deal.

I am upset though that I find my self forkless and trying to eat rice with chopsticks.  I cannot for the life of me catch anyone's attention to ask about getting a fork.  Oh well, this dress was getting a bit tight anyway so I shouldn't be eating carbs at lunch.

Maki Maki is at 169 Broadway, Ultimo.

Sushi at Tomodachi, Broadway

I normally end up here at least once a week for lunch as it’s fairly close to my work.  If it wasn’t close to my work I’d probably still make the trek as I’m addicted to any place that puts sushi on a conveyor belt so I can ogle and drool as plate after plate silently glides by.  Genius.

It’s a pretty indulgent lunch to have on a working day as Sushi trains are never really cheap, but once I get the idea of Sushi in my head my stomach won’t be happy with anything else. And a Piggy must always listen to her tummy.

My friends joke that I should’ve booked a sushi train for my upcoming wedding! If I’d thought of it trust me I would’ve!!!!  Yes, really.

Hello Tomodachi
Anyway, last night the boy & I had an appointment in Enmore and we were meeting at Broadway after work. The idea was to go somewhere in Newtown or Enmore and then scoot down to our appointment with full bellies.

Once I got to Broadway “Sushi” immediately popped into my head like I kind of knew (hoped) it would. Luckily this time the boy was thinking what I was thinking.

I’ve been to this place so many times I’ve lost count. I’m pleased to say the quality & variety of their sushi has gotten better over time (trust me, I’ve been here enough to know).  In the past the choices have been limited, the train half empty and the offerings not always that fresh or inviting. Last night the magical sushi conveyer of happiness was full of yummy plates to choose from.

The sushi on the train goes round & round...into my tummy
The good thing about going to the Tomodachi sushi train as a pair as that I can sample more plates than if I were alone.  I always try and squish five plates in at lunch time, but in reality it’s just one plate too many.  Damn you stomach!

Last night we had ten glorious plates of sushi goodness.

We started off with crab claws, which are a new and delightful discovery of for me.  I don’t care if it’s shredded crab or seafood extender inside the crispy little balls of batter as they are GOOD.  The boy and I both found it hard to just have one claw each…but sharing is caring. Blah blah blah.

Crab claw - I want more!
Even Tomodachi says I have to share my crab claw.
We also enjoyed tuna ship, edamame, prawn nigiri, soft shell crab roll (my all time favourite), tempura prawn roll, chicken teriyaki roll and some other things that I really have no idea about. I won't put up a picture of all of the plates as there are just so many - but here are some of our favourites...

Soft shell crab roll.
Some fancy, random roll with prawn & salmon. Good.
Tuna Ship
Prawn Tempura
The sushi plates here range from $2.50 up to $6.20 for a fancy gold plate. Our meal of ten plates came to $43 - but happiness is priceless, right?

The price list
The boy was very particular in making sure he had two plates from each colour - very matchy matchy.

All done!
Tomodachi Restaurant is in the Food Court at Level 2 Broadway Shopping Centre.
