I love a good weekend brunch and Fundamental in Balmain delivers the goods, both in terms of price and sheer quantity of food. When it comes to breakfast Fundamental’s motto seems to be bigger is better – they’re fueling us for the weekend’s activities, after all.
Not only that, Fundamental understand that weekends are for taking it s-l-o-w and serves breakfast up until 4.00pm. This is the perfect brunch place for sleepy-heads like me.
On the way into the café I spotted someone having pancakes and this immediately confirmed what I was going to order. One serve of Ricotta Buttermilk Pancakes with Blueberry Compote please ($10.00).
It’s hard to believe that this generous plate of thick, fluffy pancakes is only $10 and also comes with a lovely side bowl of fresh fruit. There is too much food on my plate for me to finish. I found the compote very sweet, but The Boy rightly points out that is because I was eating it by the spoonful and not mixing it up with my pancakes. Rookie error.
The Boy goes the whole hog and continues with his mission to try every Big Breakfast ($16.00) in Sydney.
As the name suggests this breakfast is BIG and at $16 is amazing value for money. The plate is overflowing with creamy scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, and a few slices of orange to help alleviate any chance of a grease induced heart attack. But wait there’s more! You also get a choice of freshly squeezed juice and coffee. Needless to say The Boy doesn’t need to eat again until dinner time.
Niecy-Poo isn’t up to the challenge of the waistband expanding Big Breakfast and opts for a simple Ham, Cheese and Tomato Omelette ($13.00).
The omelette looks deliciously fluffy and so colourful and the buttery Turkish bread looks so tasty I steal a bit for myself. Once again the meal comes with a few slices of orange which I think is a lovely touch as it offers a fresh finish to a savoury breakfast.
I really enjoyed our brunch at Fundamental and wouldn’t hesitate to come back again. The café is bright, open and airy, the staff friendly and attentive, and food is fundamentally a winner!
Fundamental is at 266 Darling Street, Balmain.

ReplyDeleteI've eaten here and neither the husband and I could finish our food. I'm still baffled by why they like decorating their plates with spirals of oranges though!
