Marrickville seems to be a suburb on the move in terms of great little cafes with Ground Roasters, Cornersmith and Vesbar all hitting the 'hood recently. Petty Cash Cafe has been in the neighbourhood for quite awhile however and somewhere I'd been wanting to try for ages. Luckily it wasn't too busy and we got a seat within about 5 minutes.
The cafe is adorable - I love it! It's quirky (vintage spoon collection anyone) with a retro/rockabilly vibe going on. I love the mismatched furniture and tableware - both make this little corner of Marrickivlle feel comfortable, homely and cozy. The place is quite small - only two prams allowed inside at a time...but they do provide blankets so you can take your food across the road to Enmore Park (if we ever have a sunny weekend that is) and picnic.
The Boy and I share a HUGE pot of Chai Tea ($5.00). It's a pretty good Chai though I forgot to ask for Soy milk which was a bit of a failure on my part.
The menu at Petty Cash is HUGE...with everything tempting the taste buds. That said, The Boy went straight for his favourite of breakfast choices - The Big Breakfast ($16.90) and this really was BIG! Free-range eggs, toast, bacon, chipolatas, house-made beans, mushrooms and rosti. Phew - that was a mouthful! Big Sister chose the Petty Cash Breakie ($14.90), a more petite version of the Big Breakfast.

I have to say that everything on the menu looked good to me (homemade brioche ice-cream and chocolate ganche sandwich - OMG, talk about temptation)! Big Brother had his heart set on Pea and Ham Soup but they had just sold out, so he had the Lamb Burger instead. Paralysed with indecision I um-ed and ah-ed for an eternity, but ended up with a great choice - Rosti with sour cream, smoked salmon and salad ($15.90, and probably healthier than the ice-cream sambo). I was thrilled that my salad had a generous scattering of flash-fried capers, something I LOVE to death, but you don't really see around that often.

Petty Cash Cafe is at 68 Victoria Road, Marrickville.
Awesome! How did I not know about this place?! I especially love fried capers too - I went through a long stage of putting them on everything... Salads, steak, pizza, breakfast... I have now moved on to deep fried anchovies :)
ReplyDeleteDid you fry your own capers...or can you buy them like that. I want to start a stage of putting them on EVERYTHING!
DeleteLooks insanely good, I would have been hard-pressed not to order the ice-cream sandwich too!
ReplyDeleteIt was a battle...but I'm glad I resisted temptation.
DeleteMaking my mouth water. Looks like I'll have to defect from Bourke Street Bakery some day and try out Petty Cash.
ReplyDeleteIt's worth it...especially if you want a more substantial breakfast.
DeleteLooks scrumptious, thanks for the tip. All these exciting little places are making me love living in Marrickville at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived in Marrickville - there are SO many good cafes.
DeleteThe Chai tea looks silky and I love the generous portion of side salad!
ReplyDeleteI love a big side-salad too....
DeleteHow funny. I just had brunch at this place. Isn't it a cute little cafe? Great breakfasts and coffee.
ReplyDeleteIt's SO cute isn't it! I love it.
Deleterosti would go so well with salad! yum!
ReplyDeleteIt sure does...it's like the healthy cancels out the fact that the rosti is fried.
DeleteI absolutely adore Marrickville! It's our go-to for organic markets, cafes and cheap Vietnamese dinners! I've never been to Petty Cash but the "HUGE" menu is surely tantalising!
ReplyDeleteGo! Go now - it's great!
DeleteI see rosti!!! I can NEVER say not to that. Such a cute cafe too!
ReplyDeleteRosti = happiness!
DeleteI have always walked past this but I've never been in! Definitely going to hit it up one day soon :) Food looks so good!!
ReplyDeleteYou should try it out - wear your stretchy Gucci pants though, the serves are pretty big.
Deletei was here a couple of weeks ago! really like this place and food is great!
ReplyDeleteIt's great isn't it...were you allowed to bring Dragon's pram inside?
DeleteWhat a gorgeous looking cafe, and the servings are huge. I'll be going there next time I'm in Marrickville.
ReplyDeleteIt's so cute looking isn't it. Love the mismash of stuff - makes it really interesting to look around the cafe.
DeleteAnother hip cafe...I just know I would love this place too! All that food looks SO good :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd love this place Jane - all the cute little bric-a-brac to look at, and the food was so good.
Deletewonderful place to spend my timeA
ReplyDeleteIt sure is.
DeleteHehe now this name definitely sticks in your memory! The servings look hearty too :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute name isn't it.
DeleteNever made it down to that part of Marrickville to check out Petty Cash, looks good!
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be the part of Marrickville I visit the most as my sister and niece both live/d nearby.
DeleteHope it opens on Sunday. I might just pop over when I head to marrickville markets
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Petty Cash is open on Sundays...enjoy.
DeleteThis place looks adorable! I just love good, solid local places. And that rosti sounds JUST like something I'd order. I'm a huge pain to take to breakfast, as I hate eggs. I get so excited when I find places that have several egg-less options!
ReplyDeleteI used to hate eggs too - I had a slight allergy to them as a kid and even now I have to really "feel like eating eggs" other they make me feel yuk.
Deletedon't think I've ever had a flash-fried caper before but it sounds pretty darn good! what a great little cafe
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever had them was at the Gourmet Pizza Kitchen in a salad - have loved them ever since, but you don't see them around all that often.
DeleteI was just scrolling through your blog when I have to admit, that rosti made me stop and LOOK. Wow looks so yummy and crispy!!!! I'm so hungry at 10.40pm :(
ReplyDeleteThe Rosit was GOOD...so were the flash-fried capers.
DeleteThanks for this lovely piece. We often take our kids swimming at the Enmore Pool and I noticed Petty Cash Cafe accross the way. We will be sure to check it out next time we are over that way.
ReplyDeleteBTW - Your blog is gorgeous. What camera do you use?

Thanks for visiting my blog & thank you for your lovely comment. It's a GREAT cafe...I love that you can take a picnic blanket over the park and chill-out whilst the kids run around.
DeleteI have A LOT of cameras that I use on this blog. The photos for this post were taken with a Canon G11. I've since bought a wonderful Olympus XZ-1 which I highly recommend (going to sell off all the other cameras and stick to this one).
Serving sizes seem really generous definitely checking out this cafe! Great snaps the china looks beautiful! Hope you had fun!!!
