(Yum Cha at) Mahjong Room, Darlinghurst

Miss Piggy dined as a guest of The Mahjong Room.

The Boy and I really enjoyed our first visit to Darlinghurst's Mahjong Room so I was delighted when I was invited to try their newly launched "Open Table Open Rice" lunch menu.

We're told that "Open Rice" means to start a meal in Cantonese and "Open Table" translates as opening up the table for a game of mahjong.  Not surprisingly VegeTARAian are here just for the "Open Rice" part of proceedings - such is the want of a food bloggers life.

The "Open Rice" menu is a tasty hybrid of Chinese yum cha and hawker-style street food. The Yum Cha experience at Mahjong Room is a much more relaxed affair than your traditional yum cha whirlwind. There are no trolly dollies vying for your attention - you simple tick what you'd like to order on the paper menu and voila, yum cha is served!  I've been known to chase the trolly dollies around a restaurant looking for what I want - so I really like the idea of ordering off a menu (it makes me look less crazy for starters).

The restaurant layout is broken into various sections- a light-filled front area, a large upstairs room and a cosy room out the back. I'm really happy that we get to sit in the covered "back-alley" section as it really makes me feel like I've left Sydney and am eating "street style" in a little Shanghai laneway somewhere. A gal can dream, can't she?

We started our lunch with a few cocktails (and finished lunch with a few more...opps)! The Lychee Martini was a BIG hit with both Tara and I. I loved the sweet, floral fruitiness of the lychee and the drink felt refreshing (and rather alcoholic too...hic)! The Spiced Sangria would be a perfect tipple for the cooler weather with the addition of warming spices cinnamon and star anise.

The food at Mahjong just "feels" healthy. The flavours are light and vibrant, and so many of the dishes are full of crunchy, fresh veggies. It's a clean, modern take on Chinese food that really appeals to me.

Often shallot pancakes can err on the side of oilness and they aren't that great to eat.  When done right (as they are here) a pan-fried Shallot Pancake is a great, but simple pleasure. The thin, crisp and flaky pastry is quite plain in itself but the little slithers of shallot studded throughout the pancake add a great savoury, almost peppery flavour to the pancake. Our bowl of  egggplant + tofu is a perfect example of the simple yet flavour packed dishes served up at The Mahong Room.  The eggplant is thinly sliced it feels like it's been steamed rather than fried which is pretty unusual to me as I find eggplant so tricky to cook so that it's tender. The eggplant is topped with slithers of slippery, cool tofu and strings of chewy enoki mushrooms and sits in a puddle of soy, ginger and shallots. So flavoursome. So simple. So healthy.

The roasted pork belly bun is The Mahjong Room's signature yum cha dish and it's fabulous. A fat slice of roast pork, resplendent with the most crackly of salty crackling sits snuggled into a soft, pillowy steamed bun. The pork is topped with a dollop of hoisin sauce and shredded shallots. It reminds me a bit of a pimped up Peking duck pancake.

The Rice Roll with Vegetables is another example of simple, fresh ingredients combining to make a stellar dish. The fresh rice paper is wrapped around crunchy batons of carrot and what I think just might be taro judging by the colour and texture of the "mystery white vegetable within".  The Vegetable San Choi Bao was great - again fresh, light and wholesome. A medley of lightly cooked diced vegetables sat within a crisp iceberg lettuce "cup" and was topped with a pile of crunchy noodles. I've had this dish before and it was good as I remembered.

The mushroom and Asian greens dumpling were so plump that they reminded me of a fat belly (mine perhaps)? The dumpling skin was perfectly cooked, not gluey at all, and the veggies within were a perfect textural combination of soft, earthy tasting mushrooms, vibrant greens and crunchy water chestnuts. We finish the savoury elements of our yum cha with a little deep fried goodness - vegetarian spring roll.  The skin of the spring roll is thicker than I'm used to seeing and it looks more like a brandy snap than a savoury spring roll. I love how crisp the skin is and the vegetable filling is again, fresh and light. Nothing is overcooked, oily or soggy.

Once upon a time I used to HATE egg custard tarts but now I cannot imagine ending yum cha without at least one, possibly two, of these flaky little pastries. These little gems were straight from the oven, piping hot and the egg custard with thick and wobbly with just a hint of vanilla.

I'm really keen to come back to Mahjong Room for one of their "Play Lunches" where they teach you how to play Mahjong and feed you delicious yum cha. Sounds like a great bit of Saturday fun to me. Who's keen?

The Mahjong Room is at 312 Crown Street, Darlinghurst. Phone them on 9361 3985.

Iron Chef, Cabramatta

Miss Piggy dinned as a guest of Iron Chef at the invite of Wasamedia.

I'm sure when most people (ie ME) think of Cabramatta they think of a suburb bursting with smells, sounds, sights and flavours similar to Vietnam...that is after all why most of us (again, I mean ME) refer to Cabramatta as Sydney's "little Vietnam".

On the other side of the train station however lies the behemoth of yum cha in south-western Sydney, Iron Chef.

I've been invited to lunch with a group of other food-bloggers which means we're shown to a rather large table complete with Lazy-Susan. If there's one thing I know about Chinese food it's that Lazy Susan = a truckload of food!

Like most yum cha places I've frequented Iron Chef is a mass of trolly dolly's each peddling their goods at hungry diners.  It can be quite overwhelming at first and if you let your tummy run away with you it's easy to have a table groaning with food in under 5 minutes (trust me, it's happened to me many a time before).

I really enjoyed my yum cha lunch at Iron Chef - they had all the bases covered and I left feeling full and satisfied.
Really love the Prawn Har Gaw (bottom) at Iron Chef- the prawns were super plump + fresh with a nice "chewy" bit to the dumpling skin.  Also enjoy the fresh Vegetable Dumpling with Peanuts (top).  I didn't try the Dim Sum - as I'm not a Dim Sum fan...I know know, what kind of "foodie" am I?
Just for something different, we were given roast pork belly pancakes instead of the Peking duck pancakes - I didn't try these as they pork is not free-range (but man I was SO tempted) but they were a BIG hit at the table.
The prawns in rice-paper were fantastic (aren't they always) as were the fresh steamed greens with oyster sauce (I always need veggies at yum cha to kid myself that I'm having a healthy lunch).  The fried noodles with veggies were also a popular item at our table.
LOVED the fried calamari at Iron Chef - it's the first time I've see "real" calamari tentacles used for this dish and the batter was totally different to anything I've had a yum cha before - much more flaky, almost like fish batter from your local fish + chip shop. Also loved the fried prawn dumplings - as I love all fried things (obviously).

Is there a happier sight than a tray crammed full of fresh-out-of-the-oven egg tarts, I think not!
Iron Chef is at 84 Broomfield Street, Cabramatta.

Phoenix, Parramatta

When I heard that Borders Bookshop was closing down in Westfield Parramatta I felt really sad. And then I felt VERY angry when they would not honour the gift voucher The Boy had bought me for my birthday - selling it to him one week and then going into liquidation the next. So angry (!!!!!).

And then when I heard Phoenix was opening up in the old Borders site I became happy once more as Phoenix = YUM CHA! Yum Cha is better than Borders any day of the week (plus I have a Kindle now so Borders is no longer a necessity in my Parramatta life).

I asked for ONE fork and received about 10, not THAT'S good service for you!
When checking out a new place what better way to do it than with 20 other food bloggers - we named it the #YumChaParty, booked ourselves a HUGE table complete with a Lazy Susan and gobble our way through most of the yum cha on offer for the best part of a Sunday afternoon. Blissful times.

REALLY great egg tarts - served warm.

So what did we eat?  It was crazy attempting to photograph everything that whizzed by on the Lazy Susan - I did try, but I failed. Here's a little snapshot of some of the food that stood still enough for a quick photo shoot.  I stuck to the vegetarian and seafood options of which there were plenty! Everything was hot and fresh apart from one dish that was a tad cold and was quickly replaces with a fresh plate.

I thought the food at Sky Phoenix was really great, everything was fresh (apart from that one dish, but who cares about one dish, right), the service was fast and attentive.  I thought the food was really flavoursome.  Judging by the amout we ate I think everyone was pretty happy and content.

Phoenix Parrmatta is at Westfield Parramatta: Shop 4070 159 - 175 Church Street. Phone them on 9891 3338.

The Eight, Haymarket

A surefire way to gather my family together is to suggest Yum Cha. Everyone seems happy to travel to the ends of the earth for a weekend Yum Cha brunch - even Niecy Poo's new beau who is fresh of the plane from Scotland (for his first EVER Yum Cha EVER)!

I'm really intrigued to see Mr Scotland's reaction to a) a grilling by our family b) his first EVER Yum Cha and c) his ability to eat Chicken Feet with my brother who is always looking for a partner in Chicken Feet crime. He seemed to have survived everything quite well.

As is customary we gather at the Yum Cha in Market City, above the ever tacky Paddy's Market. The restaurant has recently undergone a name change and a change in decor too (lots of red going on). Truth be told I actually don't know what The Eight was called before its recent change in ownership, we've always referred to it as "the place above Paddy's Markets", as you do.

Within seconds of being shown to our seats the onslaught of bamboo wielding Trolley Dolly's hits us, and not a moment to soon as we're all starving!  All of our favourites came around and within minutes are table is groaning under the weight of multiple baskets.

Seafood Dumpling
Prawn Dumpling
Spinach Dumplings
Peking Duck Pancake - this was delicious!  We all agreed one pancake each is not enough.
Green beans with pork mince - an all time personal favourite
Chicken feet - eep

Eggplant with prawn somewhere in there - tastes a thousand times better than it looks. Really!
Salt and Pepper Calamari - my all time favourite Yum Cha dish
We all left Yum Cha with full bellies and agreed the food was better than it was in our previous visits here - in The Eight's previous life. There was a never ending parade of Yum Cha trolleys going past our table and a good variety of dishes on offer - good enough to keep a table of Aussie (and Scottish) Yum Cha lovers happy.

Fisherman's Wharf Chinese Restaurant, Pyrmont

Above the hustle and bustle of the Sydney Fish Markets lies...well, more hustle and bustle at the Fisherman's Wharf Chinese Restaurant's daily Yum Cha.

After my successful blogger blind-date at Luxe Bakery a few weeks ago, I was feeling very brave and decided that it would be a great idea to organise a mass food blogger gathering. Along with the lovely Laura, we decided that a Saturday morning Yum Cha would be just the ticket. Invites were sent out to the Twitterverse and we ended up with 21 food bloggers and a few of their long-suffering better halves.

Thanks to the over-eager trolley dollies piles and piles of food landed on our table within moments of everyone arriving, and we all happily snapped away before tucking into the feast that lay before us.  Dinning with a bunch of other food bloggers is GREAT as no-one gets mad when 40,000 pictures of each dish have to be taken.  No one gets upset when the food is less than hot when they finally get to eat it.

The other great thing about dinning with such a large group is the sheer variety of food we got to sample. As well as the usual suspects of steamed dumplings, egg tarts and BBQ pork buns, I ventured into uncharted Yum Cha waters and sampled chicken feet as well as some unidentified wobbly pudding.

Overall I was really impressed with the quality of the Yum Cha at Fisherman's Wharf - before The Boy and I had even finished eating we decided we'd be heading back here ASAP.

There was a heavy leaning towards seafood (a given seeing as we were AT the fish markets) which had a few bloggers pleading for something that didn't contain prawns, but everything was fresh and really tasty. There was quite a large variety of Yum Cha on offer and something to suit everyone...even our gluten-free bloggers went home full and satisfied which I thought was great.

My favourite dish was the Salt and Pepper Prawns - however I only manged to get one before the Lazy Susan whisked them away. The prawn wontons were also great - fat juicy prawn surrounded by a crispy wonton wrapper. Lovely. The Boy and I were also taken by the juicy and succulent BBQ duck.

Laura and I nearly fell of our seats when we saw the final bill -$643.40. OMG!!! But once the bill was divided between the 24 of us it was a respectable $27 each - very reasonable considering the amount of seafood that we consumed.

Fisherman's Wharf Chinese Restaurant is at 1 Bank Street, Pyrmont. You'll find the restaurant on the first floor of the Sydney Fish Markets (above the Fruit and Vege shop).
